It is so easy to help others

Or to do someone a favor.

“Hey, will you do me a favor?” They ask.

I answer, “Sure!” or “I will if I can.”

But what about doing ourselves a favor? That seems difficult at times. Continue reading

Purple Paint

The walls in my office are painted purple

purple paint

And why shouldn’t they be? I love that color. I love it on the inside of me.

I wish I didn’t love it so much. I wish I wasn’t so predictable.

But … I do … and I am.

We will move from our house this year (we are cleaning the attic and basement as we speak — err … write). I wonder if I’ll ever have another completely purple room. Perhaps. Perhaps not.

But I’ve had one for well over a decade. And I’ve loved it. Continue reading

Staring at a blank screen

How many times have we done that? Just stared at a blank screen.blank monitor

We need to get something written,  nothing comes. We need to plan something for dinner, no ideas. We need to write a comforting card to someone, the words aren’t there. We need to make it through our must-do list, our energy evaporates.

Today it is a blank screen for me. Nice bright white screen.

And it made me think about life. Sometimes we forget that every single day is a clean slate, a blank screen, an empty page waiting to be written upon. Continue reading

What Encourages Me

Seeing people do amazing things encourages and inspires me. Hearing a testimony about someone conquering their fear or disability or insecurity and finish something awesome lights a fire in me. Meeting someone who is simply “doing it” absolutely challenges me.

Do you know anyone like that? Have they spurred you on?

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24

I came in contact with www.No41.org through my daughter-in-law. I sat and read every word on their website, then I read their blog entries, then I stared at the pictures of those lovely ladies that have had their lives completely changed because of one dreamer and doer: Tara. Continue reading

Encourager is a Person

Encourager — one who encourages.

Pretty simple, right? If you encourage someone, you are an encourager.

Regardless of how you  would describe yourself, an encourager should be on the list.

I had the great delight of meeting Lisa recently. She is an inspiration and an encouragement. Primarily because of what she has accomplished, but also because of her desire to be an encourager.Clean for over a year

She is 468 days clean!! Yes, you read that correctly.

468 days! AND COUNTING!

Hello, my name is Pat. I am NOT a clean-a-holic

I like having things clean. I like tidy. But I am not one of those folks who lives to clean. I don’t get my joy and peace in my heart from the actual act of cleaning. I don’t necessarily mind it (sometimes), but I don’t have it as my go-to activity.

My mother and my youngest daughter, on the other hand, love to clean. I mean L-O-V-E to clean. Apparently it skipped right over me. My younger sister doesn’t necessarily live to clean, but she gets a kick out of it way more than me. And when she is stressed out, she cleans. Me? Not my stress relief. Or any other relief for that matter. I wish it had skipped my sister, too, because then I could say it just skipped my generation. But, no, it seems to have just skipped me.

Organized pantry

I wonder which is my pantry cabinet and which is my mother’s??

A Spot For Everyone, and Everyone in Their Spot

There is a spot for every type of personality. Every single one.  There’s a spot for you. (Do you love Big Bang Theory? You know, Sheldon has a spot.) Whether you feel like you have a “spot” or a purpose … you do.

Do you, at times, feel like you are sitting in someone else’s chair? Perhaps you don’t think you are entitled to sit in the cool chair you have been given. But you are. Why not you? That chair can be for you!

One way to make your life easier is to stop trying to fit into someone else’s chair. And don’t make someone fit a seat that you choose for them instead of allowing them to sit in the seat they were made to sit in. If you aren’t sure of your spot, start by believing there is a spot that is just for you. Because there is. Believe it!

Friendship Therapy

We movedfriends a lot when I was growing up. I didn’t establish any long-term friendships. That did not keep me from having friend therapy wherever we were. As often as possible. Driving my mother crazy. Repeatedly.

As an adult, we have stayed put (perhaps for too long), and I have friendships that track back for decades.

There are few substitutes for the uplift of a group of fun-loving, kind and supportive friends. Laughing together. Crying together.  Sharing life together. (I know I talked about that in this post.)

So often, however, when people are down or struggling or depressed; they hole themselves up. Alone. I think that is a dreadful trick of the enemy. Because we are supposed to share life. And sharing life can perk you up in ways nothing else can.

3 Things We Found in Every Small Town

Well, almost every one. And we looked.

Last summer we decided to go on a back roads vacation. We spent but a few miles on an interstate. The rest of the six days’ trip was back roads, little county roads, and lovely scenic drives.

It was fantastic. We stopped at diners named Joe’s and Mel’s and Ruby’s. We took side roads to see the town’s library and city hall. We took our time. And we loved it. Except for the night we could not find a hotel. Seriously. It took three towns to find a pillow for our heads. Continue reading
